ABOUT THE DRAGON ARTS GROUP:
The Dragon Arts Group was organized in May 2004 specifically to
coordinate an annual art fair and other similar events in downtown
DeForest with the hope of raising funds to provide scholarships to DeForest
High School students looking to pursue an arts education. A secondary
goal of the organization is to showcase what the DeForest area, “The
North Star of Dane County”, has to offer and promote tourism to the area.
Following are the primary opportunity areas for the Dragon Arts Group:
The Dragon Art Fair: The Dragon Art Fair was named in honor of the
Norwegian dragons located on top of the DeForest Area Public Library.
Since the Library was built in 2002, area community groups have tossed
around the idea of a holding a festival inspired by the area’s Norwegian
heritage. Maintaining that heritage, but differentiating it from other area
communities festivals and events, led us to draw on the Norwegian
dragons. Official legend has it that in medieval Norway, these stylized
dragons were placed on the peaks of the eaves of buildings to ward off evil
spirits and guard the treasure within. We want our visitors to find the
“treasure” that lies in the DeForest area and hope that the art fair will be a
means to bring people here to see what we have to offer. This is a fine arts
and crafts fair that is juried by the group to ensure a quality event. Other
events occurring the same day are the DeForest Car Show and Historical
Society Ice Cream Social. A silent auction is held to benefit the Historical
Society. Click here for Dragon Art Fair Information.
The scholarship program is a primary component to the organization. A
contest is held to select a new logo for the following year. The contest is
open to DeForest High School students who submit a logo using the
following criteria:
• The submission has to be the students own original drawing of a
Norwegian Ridgeback Dragon or preferably European Dragon.
• Dragon(s) should have a friendly attitude – No bloody, angry, scary or
violent images will be accepted.
• No clip art is acceptable.
• No computerized art is acceptable.
• Drawing to be outlined with black if colors are used.
• If colors are used, limit colors to 6, including the background color.
• Finished product details must be able to be seen when reduced in size to
1.5 inches by 1.5 inches and also large enough for T-shirt size.
• Students, name, address, phone number, grade and school counselor
name must be included with submission.
If necessary, the logo may be modified to address printing requirements or
the needs of the Dragon Arts Group.
Cultural Escapades! Occasionally, the group may charter a bus to travel to
Chicago or elsewhere to see a play or sponsor a musical event in the
DeForest area. Most recently, the Group took 55 people to Chicago to see
"Wicked" and it was a great success! Watch this site for upcoming events.
